AQUATICS.

WELLINGTON REGATTA. The annual regatta which is to be held on Anniversary Day, under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, promises to be as successful as in previous years. Subscriptions are coming’ in freely, and the prize money offered amounts to ,£232. The choice of a flagship has not yet been settled, but the s.s. Wainui will follow the First-class Championship Race. The chief interest of course centres in the First-class Championship Race, for which the Mascotte, Waitangi, Maritana and Mima have been entered. The Waitangi, which left Auckland on Wednesday week, arrived here at 1.30 p.m. yesterday in charge of Captain Butt. She made an excellent trip down the coast, seeing that she had to contend against adverse winds. She evidently requires more ballast, but will have an excellent chance if the weather is light. The vessel was very much admired as she lay off the breastwork, the general opinion being that she is a beauty. The chances of the Mascotte are considered good should a heavy wind be blowing, and the owners of the Maritana are sparing no pains to prepare their boat for the struggle. In any case the race promises to be a good one, and should be well worth watching. The competitors in the second-class race will be the Pastime, Rona, Isca, Mapu, Mahina and Atalanta. The last-named arrived from Napier yesterday, and the Pastime, according to a telegram from Lyttelton, is to make a start from that port today should the weather be favourable. The Regatta Committee has reserved to itself the right of placing a man in each yacht to see that the ballast is not shifted.

It was expected that the newFalf-raters which Mr Logan is building at Auckland for Mr A. H. Turnbull and Mr J. Y. Wardrop would be able to compete at this regatta. Owing, however, to Mr R. Logan, senr., having been obliged to come down with the Waitangi, they will not be able to put in an appearance.

The 18ft and 14ffc races of the Arawa Sailing Club were got off on Saturday under favourable circumstances. Both classes were started together, and with one exception the boats got away fairly close to one another. The result of the first round was rather a surprise owing to one of the 14-foot boats, the Curro, beating all the 18footers, including the half-rater Dauntless. On the beat-up the second time the Dauntless overhauled the Curro, and rounded the Kaiwarra mark buoy a short distance ahead of her, and maintained her lead in the run home, and finished lmin lsec before her. The Rita finished second in the 18ft class, and after allowing the lona time she beat her by 2min 28sec. The lona, which was not sailing nearly so well as usual, takes third place. The Myra, with her time allowance, finished 33 seconds behind the lona. In the 14ft class the Curro came in an Casy winner, beating the Belle, which was second, by Bmin ssec, without her time allowance. The Oriental, which was 5 a min late in getting away, secured third place with her time allowance, and only lost second position by one second. The Spray, with time allowance, beat the Mab by lmin 39see. As the annual regatta will be held on Tuesday week, there will be no race next Saturday.

Christchurch:, January 14. The yachts Mascotte and Pastime will leave Lyttelton to-night for Wellington to take part in the regatta on January 22nd.
