ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
The first meeting of the General Lending Board established under the Government Advances to Settlers Act was held- yesterday afternoon. There were present—The Superintendent (Mr J. Tv. War bur ton), the Colonial Treasurer (Hon J. G. Ward), the Government Insurance Commissioner (Mr J. H. Richardson), the Commissioner of Taxes (Mr J. McGowan), and the Secretary to the Treasui-y (Mr J. B. Hey wood). The only members absent were the SurveyorGeneral (Mr S. Percy Smith) and the Solicitor-General (Mr W. S. Reid). The Superintendent occupied the chair. As the only business before the meeting was to arrange for the valuations, it was resolved to leave the selection of the local valuers in the hands of the Superintendent, who will accordingly now take the requisite steps for that purpose. Meetings will be held from time to time as the valuations come in to decide in each case as to the. granting of advances. Over 600, applications are now recorded, and the aggregate amount of advances applied for is upwards of half a million sterling. The stated value of the security offered is fully , three-fold that of the amount for which application is made.
