A HEROIC INVENTOR.

'—'♦ Our Mastorton correspondent Avrites: — Some few days ago I mentioned that a local resident had discovered what ho claimed to bo an antidote for scalds and burns. The residont in question is a Mr Jones, other Aviso “Professor” Jones, an erstwhile second-hand doalor of Wellington. Tlio Professor intimated through tho local paper that lie intended giving a public exhibition on Tuesday afternoon. Accordingly a large and scoptical audience assembled on a vacant section of land, where the Professor had a copper boiler full of Avater. After applying a lot of fuel and enduring a lot of banter, tho Professor decided that tho water was boiling, and removing his coat and tho covering to his cranium, and turning up his sleeves, he made three dashes at tho Avator with liis hand. Then he performed a sort of Maori baka, and rushed for a pot containing a thick yollow substance, Avhicli might have boen taken for paint or anything else. The perspiration fairly poured out of tho Professor as ho sought relief from the pain occasioned by tho scalding. For half an hour or more his hand Avas steeped in the magic pot, but to no purpose. Tho croAvd was unsympathetic, and mocked at tho torture of the unfortunate man, whose hand was covered Avitli blistors. The Profossor admitted that tho experiment Avas a failure, and although he iutonds giving another exhibition ho does not think there are as many millions in the discovery as ho at first anticipated.
