MR GLADSTONE’S ENERGY.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —In the very interesting article in another column concerning Mr Gladstone's righteous and passionate indignation aft* national wrongs and cruelties, you make mention of his celebrated pamphlet re, the Bulgarian atrocities in 1876, which created such a stir at the time. I believe the pamphlet to be of considerable length, possibly you may know the number of pages. Perhaps it might be of interest to some of your readers to know that this pamphlet was written by Mr Gladstone at one sitting, in what is known as the long room, adjoining the reading room of the British Museum, London. I was a constant reader at the British Museum Library in 1879, and I had this from the attendants there as a fact. I knew of a man nicknamed “ Stunner” Birch who achieved the physical feat of polishing off a whole leg of mutton at one sitting, but. Mr Gladstone’s intellectual feat has been, and I believe may be, regarded as a ** record ” performance. Trusting you may be able to find space in your paper for this little bit of intelligence, the accuracy of which can be vouched for, —I am, &c., E.L.B. Wellington, January 14, 1895.
