An involuutnry short distance race took place at the Palm jrston Railway Station on the departure of the Wellington train on Monday evening, says yesterday’s Standard. An intending passenger arrived at the platform just as the train moved off, and eluding the porter’s attempt to keep him away from the train, he ran up the platform to get on board ; but the guard, Ban Mouton, was too much for him, as ho cantered alongside the late arrival and fended him off, jvliile the crowd enjoyed the fun. There is some advantage in having a sprinter for a guard. Dr Newman, M.H.R., has addressed a large meeting at Gisborne on political questions. He said he considered the depressed state of affairs was largely due to over-taxation and harassing legislation, pointing out the feeling of insecurity that existed at the present time. In view of the labours of the Tariff Commission resulting in further Customs duties next session, he urged the formation of a National Party which would study wholly and solely the interests of the Colony. Br Newman was accorded a hearty voto of thanks. Mr W. P. James, jury officer, has appointed the following constables to prepare jury lists for the out-districts in which they are stationed: —Constable Baskiville, Pahautanui; Constable Lyster, Petone; Constable McKinnon, Upper Hutt; Constable O’Farrell, Johnsonville; and Constable Cruickshanks, Lower Hutt. Persons objecting to their names appearing on the jury lists should call at the police stations and state the nature of their objections*
