TRAIN FARES.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —The initial Sunday train for the Upper Hutt was fairly patronised, some 50 passengers being booked, of whom about one-third were first-class. If instead of running a train to arrive at 3.30 and start back an hour later, the authorities »vould also extend the Lower Hutt morning trains to Upper Hutt, the department would then secure the morning milk traffic, and residents of wayside stations could take a run down to McNab's or town. Another matter deserves the consideration of the Minister for Bail ways, viz., cheap day excursion tickets as on the Manawatu line. One can. travel to Porirua, Paremata, or Plimmerton by "day excursion," firstclass return fare being 2s, and maximum distance 18 miles, ■ second-class fare being Is 6d. Compare this with the Government line. Te Aro to Silverstream, 18, miles, 5s first-class, and 3s 9d second-class, or Upper Hutt 5s lid
first-class, 3s lid second-class. It is a wonder any one countenances such extortion. Beyond a certain point each passenger means clear profit extra. Full trains must follow cheap fares.—l am, &c, Traveller.
