The Switchback Railway was successfully started oh the 2Qth, large numbers riding in the carriages, especially during the evening. The .engine which drives the carriages worked splendidly throughout, and there is apparently not the slightest reason to fear accidents of any kind. The water engine for the. electriclight' broke down after working for rubout/an hour, but; this will be remedied to day, and the railway will run during each afternoon and evening until further notice- -A brass band under Mr F. L.Dean played during the evening, and a capable staff "of assistants were most obliging and attentive to the public. - ; The committee " of - the. New Zealand Friendly Societies' Guarantee Association at their meeting on the 20th authorised the issue of free policies to all lodges assured: '.":' "■.-■.,
