Shooting on the Honorary Reserve Corps' range at Cashmere yesterday, J. R. Wake!in eclipsed all his previous performances by scoring 101 at 500, 600 and 700 yards out of a possible 105, the range totals being respectively 34, 33 and 34. This is the world's recordrf or--those ranges, the previous best score being 100; made in I£Bo by Lieutenant J. H. Eales, of Yictbria. ~ ' >v~ L ' Ab* .

The rifle used was the Webley-Martini, and the ammunition was manufactured for the New Zealand Government by- the Colonial Ammunition Company. Dunedin, December 21.

Last Friday Judge_Williams heard argument in a summons by the Oamaru Harbour Board for directions to the Receiver to apply the surplus of special rate levied under the Act of 1887—that is to say, what would remain after paying interest on the loan raised under that Acfc—towards forming a sinking fund.-

Mr Woodhouse opposed the application on behalf of Beck with Smith, an 1879 bondholder, on the ground that the 1879 bondholders had a charge on the surplus rates, and that circumstances had not arisen under which thel Bbatd,were entitled to create a sinking fund.

To-day the Judge dismissed the summons.

Dunedin, December 21.

At the Police Court to-day, the case against Captain Colville, of the ship Blenheim, was dismissed, the Court finding that he had nvt, by omitting to do any-, thing, caused immediate danger to the life of the complainant, Who is a sailor on board his ship. The Bench also decided that the charge of drunkenness against the captain was entirely, disproved. At the City Court Pyfe -and Cumming, drapers, were fined 5s and costs on each of five charges of not allowing their employees a weekly half-holiday, and Mollison and Co., drapers, were fined a similar amount on two charges. Costs, .£1 Is, were allowed against each defendant.
