CARTERTON.

Mr G. A. - Fairbrother, who has just done the round trip, returned to Carter* ton on Friday night. Being colonial born Rtid forming his ideas of what the London market is like on kl ' travellers tales, he waa somewhat disappointed on anivung in the great produce centre about Tooley street, at the dirty narrow streets and dingy warehouses. He got some idea however of the enormous volume cf business that is carried on on the Surrey side of the Thames. I have not had a chance to interview him yet, but I have no doubt he will supply me with some information at an early date that will prove of value to the numerous produce exporters who read the Mail. His many years connection with the Dalefield Daily Company as its secretary, and the great interest takes in dairy business, marks him out as one particularly well l suited to visit and report on the Home markets. Our local school has been withouc a permanent head teacher for a long while, Mr Br&nn* *-¥rhO that position, having for the best part of a year been absent on leave and ultimately resigned. The Board invited applications for the post, and at its last meeting selected one out of eighteen candidates, and forwarded his n&ifte to the committee for their approval. also sent the testimonials of the otlvS candidates. The chairman and tvvo of tK%Ooromittee approved the Boards nomlwi they were out-voted, the remainin|m* in favour of retaining the sorvio*! $ the gentleman who is fcemporarily'fiijAng:the vacancy. Only for the fact that latter had previously pledged to a certain course of action it is pot there would have teen any thing vote in favour of the can<s|p*. : recommended by the Board. : The Mayor of GreytoTjH*U(fc& far-seeing man. He r'ecognisfcsV-'th#.;.t” 6 town ahead it ipust an eas^- Oprnmunication with the back country. Waiohine river, unbridged as it, is except; at one point,“shut them off- ©onir-. munication with large agricultural and pastoral districts. On the west it drive* the trade of Matarawa to Carterton, and on the east that-of Martinborough is diverted to Featherston by the unbridged Heagorty,by sheer persistency, has knocked out of the Government a grant in aid of bridging the river' at:Matarawa to the extent of LSOO. He wants the ratepayers of Grey town and Matarawa to make up the deficiency and start the work/ The grant was included in the last estimates. Now Mr Heagerty is agitating for a bridge at Papawai across the Ruatnahuqga, that the Greytown people may share with Featherston the Martinborough trade. Whilst commending Mayor Heagerty. for his energy, I can only surest to Jlim the desirableness of " setting one bridge well under way beforo - Starting a project for a second. Times are bad enough now, and to add to the burdens of the settlers by fresh taxation is hardly advisable. At the same time it is quite right to keep the matter in view, ' so that when times mend and farmers get more for their corn than the present starvation prices, they may * take the proposal kindly* rt . • • The Wairarapa is not a gram growing district; lienee farmers are nob so much Kurt at- the present low market for cereals as their neighbours of Canterbury. Just now it is the dai'y ■ industry that is keeping the- Wairarapa small farmers afloat, and while prices for dairy produce are.ruling so favourably it /' will be the essence of wisdom on their part to reduce as much as possible all standing mortgiues and debts, that when the inevitable fall in prices comes they may be in a position to bear the strain.
