When the Penguin, which was coming from Lyttelton, was just outside the Heads on Sunday afternoon it was noticed that a steam launch, which was some distance off in the direction of Lyell’s Bay, was signalling, apparently for assistance. The captain of the Penguin headed his vessel for the smaller one, as it was feared something had gone wrong with the machinery, the sea being lumpy at the time. On approaching nearer, however, it was found that there was nothing amiss, an 1 that probably the occupants of the launch were only welcoming the returning cricketers. The Penguin lost over half an hour in consequence of the thoughtlessness of those on board the launch.

The Garrison Band, conducted by Mr T. Herd, and the City Brass Band, conducted by Mr J. H. Otto Schwartz, gave an admirable performance on the Basin Reserve on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of spectators. The performance, which was in aid of the uniform fund of the Garrison Band, was much appreciated, and the sum of <£lo was collected. The contract for the uniforms has been let to a local firm, and it is expected that they will be ready for use by the end of the year. We acknowledge receipt of office calendars from Mr C. W. Benbow (South British Insurance Company), Messrs Levin and Co. (Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company), and Messrs Bannatyne and Co. (Royal Insurance Company).
