DRAUGHTS.

BLACK

WHITE.

TO THE DRAUGHTS EDITOR NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir,— ln your issue of the New Zealand Mail of the 7th instant, I. was pleased to see you liad a Draughts Column. Some time past, letters appeared in a local paper accusing Wellington of being so far behind at the game of draughts, which, no doubt, is a fact. Now, I think if you were to keep up your column with plenty of good play, it would give an impetus to the game. I consider the games you liad in your last week’s issue really good, only that if you look up the said paper you will find you have repeated the Defiance variations under the Second Double Corner game. This is a blunder that must be avoided, as the mixing of numbers ” spoils the game of draughts at once. —Yours, &c., Jno. Barton.

Adelaide road, Ne vtown, December 10. [We kept a Draughts Column going for some time, and invited the eo-operation and assistance of local players. The encouragement thus asked for was, however, not forthcoming, and for a time the column was discontinued. We will now make a new start, and trust local players will do their best to keep us supplied with particulars of good games.— Ed. N.Z.M.] ' Mr Barton continues:—

The following is a game played in Wellington recently between J. Barton and T. Roach:,

At Note A Mr Leggat remarked that 1 5 was a much stronger line of play. The following is some play on - it, which I think should win for Black :—•

A reader of the Mail wishes to know who is now the champion draughts player of Australasia. Can any other reader kindly give us the information ? e
