SARA BERNHARDT.
Paris, December 8. Mdme. Sara Bernhardt is to be decorated as a Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honour. The Legion of Honour is a numerous order, but not so numerous as it was in 1877, when its membership reached the grand total of 69,000. In that year a regulation was made that only one appointment should be made for every two vacancies, the consequence of which was that the membership was very considerably reduced. In 1892 the members were — Chevaliers, 36,143; Ofiiciers, 6784; Commandeurs, 1072; Grands Ofiiciers, 220; and Grands Croix, 48. The annual allotments to the members are —Chevaliers, 250 franca ; Ofiiciers, 500 ; Commandeurs, 1000; Grands Ofiiciers, 2000; Grands Croix, 3000. Madame Sara Bernhardt is not by any means the first woman who has been decorated. The rule that admission to the order is confined to the Military and Naval services and some kind of Civil employment seems to have been relaxed in her case as it was in that of the famous painter Rosa Bonheur some 20 years ago. Probably service at some time is a subsidised theatre, or the commission to paint a f picture may be held as sufficient to bring distinguished persons within the rule.
