HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ' ordinary meeting-. of the Hutt County Council was held on Tuesday. Present—Councillors H. Cook (chairman), J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. Jillet, F. A. Majendie, F. Bradey, 11. A. Field and G-. Brown. The resolution of May Bth, 1894, as to tho payment of dog tax at the County CounciLoffice, was rescinded and on the motion of Councillor Field it was resolved that-the dog tax be fixed for 1895 at 2s 6d per head for dogs used for stock driving and rabbit hunting, and at 10s for dogs used for other purposes. The clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to have the tax collected immediately after the Ist January, and the councillors of the various ridings were authorised to appoint collectors for their districts. A letter was received from the Railway Commissioners declining to accept the offer of the Council with respect to a level crossing near Hayward’s. It was decided to take the' opinion of the Council’s solicitor as to the Commissioners’ liability to form the crossing. A letter was received from the secretary of the Manawatu Railway Company with reference to a crossing at Waikanae, and asking if the Council were prepared to pay the cost, which would be about <£lo7. Councillor Field said he had informed the general manager of the Company that the Council could not afford to spend that amount at present. It was decided to take the opinion of Mr Skerrett as to the liability of the City Council to pay rates on the Wainui-o-mata waterworks property. The clerk was directed to provide a supply of dog- collars and badges for 1895. It was decided to accept the offer of thre« acres of land W the Asylum estate at

Porirua for the purpose of a public cemetery from the Lunacy Commissioners, the Council to fence the land. Dr Newman, M.H.R., was thanked for his persistent advocacy of the Council’s request for this hand. A committee consisting of the whole Council was appointed to meet the Horowlienua County Council at Paikakariki at a date to be arranged for the purpose of discussing the proposed alterations of the boundary between the counties. The inspector was given authority to complete tire work known as No. 3 contract, Akatarawa road. The Inspector was directed to take the necessary steps to prevent the deposit of rubbish on the public roads under the care of the Council. Councillor Wakeham said that in deference to the request of a number of ratepayers, he had decided not to carry out his intention of resigning his position as councillor. It was decided to send a letter of condolence to Councillor Wakeham on the death of his son. Accounts amounting to £167 6s 9d were passed for payment, after which the Council adjourned, Councillor Bradey moved at the meeting of the Hutt County Council on Tuesday that considering the expenditure of the County now exceeds its income, and that 8 per cent, is paid on the overdraft, it is desirable that no salary be paid the chairman nor travelling expenses to the councillors. The motion was negatived, only the mover voting for it. It was decided at the meeting of the ■ Hutt County Council on Tuesday that in view of the reduction which has taken place in the rate of interest on deposits by the bank, the clerk be instructed to request the Colonial Bank to reduce the rate of interest on the Council’s overdraft.
