BUTTER STATISTICS.

By W. Halberg.

The import of butter to England lor the last five years, according to special statistics, was as follow-s : . . -

It will be seen from the above statistics that the increase in the consumption of butter in England for 1893 has been 144,466 cwt more than in 1892. France, Canada and the United States of America exported together to England about 11.2,000 cwt less than in 1892. Other butter-producing countries had to meet the demand in England by exporting ' about 260,000 cwt more than in 1892 Denmark tops the list with 70,0003 wt, Sweden and Germany with 40,OOOcwt each more than in 1892. Besides these countr ; es there were in the first and last months of the year imported large quantities of butter from Australia and New Zealand. Five years ago New South Wales exported to England 675 cwt, Victoria 1312 cwt, South Australia nothing, and New Zealand 14,267 cwt, a total of 16,255 cwt. In 1893 the total was 169,449 cwt, of which Victoria alone supplied 105,994 cwt. If these large quantities of butter had not been imported from Australia and New Zealand, the supply would not have been sufficient to meet the demand of the English market, and the quotation for all sorts of butter would certainly have been higher. The quotation for Danish butter was for 1893 104 s per .cwt; for 1892, 110 s per cwt. The Australian supply began, in 1893, in the last weeks of October, and from the middle of November the sale of butter was strongly forced from London to Scotland, and did much to demoralise the market, and the prices were strongly pressed down.

The import to England from the United States of America was very small, and has gone down from 110,OOOcwt in 1889 to 23,000 cwt in

1893, which certainly is due to tile increase of the population in Ameiica. The import of margarine to England for the last five years is given below :
