ROARING IN HORSES.
Dr A. J. Has! am, of the Army Veterinary Department, records iti the current huin be r~ob t h o-VjeA&rinarian two cases of roaring in which he pefonned Professor Fred Smith’s operation, which has already been referred to in these columns. It consists of an operation on the laryngeal'motor!;..nerve. In the first case it was performed on an Australian mare in the 4th Bengal Cavalry. She was ten and a-half years old, and had been a rank, roarer for two and a half years. She roared at a walk, and could not be worked at any pace owing to respiratory distress. At the end of two months after she had been operated upon there was an improvement, and in another month the improvement was very great, and she.,c-mid-be cantered for five
miuutes without showing acuto or painful distress. "Tire second case was not so successful, partly because, as the writer states, of his own “ bad surgical interference." On the_whole, however, he is hopeful of the future prospects of the new operation with further experience. He concludes that “ tire whole subject, is one of intense interest, o and requires complete experimental inquiry." With this we agree. Any operation that promises good results in "'cases of roaring is of great importance to all liorse-owuers, and calls for thorough investigation by the veterinary profession.-— Ll've Stock Journal.
