The annual statutory meeting of the United District Charitable Aid Board was held on Wednesday afternoon in the CiQ Council Chamber's, Mr H. D. Bell, M.H.R., in the chair. Hare on account of ill-health Mr Bell was re-elected chairman and treasurer. Messrs Fraser, Petherick, Kirk and the chairman were appointed a finance committee. The Chairman said that from an estimate prepared of the receipts and expenditure up to the end of the financial year, it would be seen that they would have a credit balance of .£319. Were if not for the works which were started at the Queen’s Drive, it would have been impossible for th 3 Board to have carried on. He said he introduced a Bill into Parliament last session which would enable the Board to make a further levy if necessary, but the Wairarapa members talked out the measure. Another exhibition of Mr Hansen’s lifesaving apparatus was given on Wednesday afternoon in the Kilbirnie Baths. Owing to an accident to the pipes there was not such a depth of water in the basin as was desirable, but, nevertheless, the apparatus was thoroughly tested, and the result proved highly satisfactory. The jacket, the largest size of which only weighs 16oz, was put on a young man, who floated easily in the water without having to make the slightest movement to keep himself afloat. He also showed the strength of the apparatus by repeatedly bumping against the sides of the bath, and against a large plank in the bath, neither of which had the least effect upon it. In fact, the inventor claims that it is almost impossible to puncture it, and the tests to which it was subjected appeared to bear out this contention. The lady who was to have assisted in the exhibition did not enter the water, but a specimen of the lady’s apparatus was put on the young man above mentioned, who floated in it with the greatest ease. The jacket is easily put on and quickly filled with air, and it appears to possess all the qualities which the inventor claims for it. We acknowledge receipt of handy office calenders for 1895 from Mr W. I. Bolarn (New Zealand Insurance Company), Messrs J. H. Bethune and Co. (Sun Fire Office) and Messrs Johnston and Co.
