The Wellington branch of the Public Service Association hold a picnic at the Upper Hutt on Friday. About 200 persons travelled thither by train, and favoured by beautiful weather, spent a very pleasant day rambling about the grounds which Mr O. Brown had so kindly placed at tlieu* disposal. Cricket and other games were indulged in, and a large supply of hot water was provided by the committee. The railway authorities had made excellent arrangements for the conveyance of the picnickers to their destination and back, and Mr Mahr, stationmaster at the Upper Hutt, was also very assiduous in looking after their welfare. The committee desire to thank them for their kindness The arrangements for the picnic were in the hands of the local committee, of which Mr J. Ashcroft is chairman, and Messrs F. K. do Castro and A. O. Gibbes proved themselves capable and energetic in the position of joint secretaries. The only Victoria Cross awarded in connection with the Balaclava charge has just been sold by auction'in London, with other w'&r relics, and realised ,£155. The Cross was awarded to a lieutenant, who is still living, for saving the life of an officer by cutting down three Russians who were in close pursuit.
