INSPECTION OF GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS.

; APPOINTMENT OF INSPECTORS. * A VERY NECESSARY STEP. In the closing days of last session the Premier stated in answer to a question ;put to him in the House by Mr G. W. Russell that the Government intended to have an examination made of the railway plant, permanent way and bridges prior - to taking over the lines from the Commissioners. He did not think they would be • justified as a - Government in taking over these lines unless their condition was shown. It was necessary both in fairness to the Commissioners and in justice to the Government. In conformity with this statement, the Engineer-in-Chief (Mr W. H. Hales) and Mr C. Napier Bell have p been deputed to make the examination ..abdve referred to. They leave for Auckland by Tuesday morning’s express, and will work their way South, reporting to the Government at the conclusion of their labours. -
