NEW GAOL FOB DUNEDIN

It was resolved in Cabinet on Monday to proceed Avith the erection of new police stations at Aratapu and Pukekohe, in the Auckland district, and at Waitahuna, in Otago. The one at Pukekohe will probably be constructed on the co-operative principle and the others by contract. Cabinet also decided on the erection of a new gaol, at Dunedin. This work . will likeAvise be carried out on the co-operative principle, and is estimated to cost about £IO,OOO. The plans provide for a brick building with ornamental facing's, and the object is to make it as externally unlike a gaol as possible, seeing that it is to occupy the present gaol site inside the city and nea.r the new police station, which in general design it is to match. : Arrangements are being- completed by the Public Works Department for making an early start with the dredging of Nelson Harbour, vvhieh was authorised, by Parliament last session. The department is now in treaty Avith the Westport and Greymouth Harbour Boards for the hire of a suitable dredging plant. Mr Wilson, resident engineer at Wellington, is to have charge of the dredging operations,
