While working on the drainage works at the corner of Adelaide road and John street on Saturday a man named James Nicholas was buried up to his knees by the falling in of a trench. He escaped with a severe shaking. At the inquest on the man Sweeney, killed at Three-Log Whare, the evidence showed that a party had been blasting, and had dislodged a lot of mullock on to the stage, amongst which was a large lump of papa rock resting on the top. A corner of the lump of papa broke off and struck Sweeney. Deceased was a married man with a grown tip family, who reside at Greymouth. He retained his consciousness to the last, and gave instructions to his mates where to find what money lie possessed, and what to do with, it, and where to find his friends, and then bade them good-bye. ’ ; The elderly man Moore, who was knocked down by a train at Foxton early last-week,, died in the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday without recovering consciousness. He a,nd a companion had been drinking, and thought they welre going home, when Iwi walked right over the. wharf, and someone hearing the splash ran along and had hard work to keep the other Native from falling in. The body was recovered. Thames, November 28. - A man named Woodward attempted suicide to-day by shooting himself. The shot just grazed his heart, and though ho still lives no hopes are entertained of his recovery. He has been in failing health lately, and this preyed upon his mind, and in addition he has been out of work for some time, whilst some shares he had in an Australian bank, recently willed to him, have depreciated very much in value. B ' *\ " ' Christchurch, December 1. < ** About midnight on Friday Charles Henry .Wagstaff, canvasser for the Lyttelton Times, who resides at Papanui, found a man named Charles Langdon prowling about his premises, and attempting to get in at the servant girl's window. Wagstaff went outside, and as Langdon was running, discharged a gun, Langdon receiving the charge in his hip and hand. Wagstaff informed a doctor and the police, and Lang<don was removed to the hospital. Wagstaff was arrested and brought before the Court this morning, and remanded on bail for a week.

Jt is not known what Langdon’s motive was in going to the house. He is suffering from the shock, and has not been able to give any explanation. He also lives at Papanui, and is a married man. Wagstaff states that he did not fire Avith the intention of hitting the man. . Invercargill, December 3. Anxiety is felt for the safety of the cutters Anna and Pride of the Ocean, which left for a sailing cruise at the Southern Islands when the open season was.;" proclaimed.
