JOHNSONVILLE AND HUTT COUNTY TROTTING CLUB.

The Spring Meeting of the above club was held on Wednesday at Johnsonville. The weather was delightfully fine, which tempted a large number of people, including a number of ladies, to make the journey from town, the special trains from the Manawatu station being well patronised. The total attendance was about 500.

The course was in good order, and there being a down grade along the back of the course, fast times were registered during the day. The trotting of Robin, Nea, J.H., Billy Buttons and Kelpie was much admired.

The result of the Maiden Trot did not appear to please a section of the public, and after Agnes had won the Pony Harness Trot, the stewards held a meeting to decide a protest against the mare for inconsistent running in the Pony Saddle, and for the satisfaction of the public the mare was tried a mile in saddle, to ascertain whether her running in the first race was correct. The exhibition she gave, such as it was, was nearly as bad as her “go ” in the first race, and, her owner having assured the stewards that the mare had not hitherto been successful in saddle events, the proie;b was dismissed.

It was thought at first that the mishap between J.H. and Kelpie in the Railway Harness Trot, when both horses collided, had ended seriously, but luckily Kelpie and his driver (Hamil) escaped without injury, but although J.H. was not injured his driver (Mouatt) got a nasty shaking, and his sulky was smashed up. The mishap, as far as can be learnt, was purely accidental.

The sum of ,£IOO9 was put through the totalisator by Mr F. N. Jones, of Nelson, being an increase of £2OO on-the last meeting. The following are the results : —- Maiden Handicap (saddle or harness), of 20 sovs. Two miles. 61 Mr J. Miller’s b m Violetta, 25sec (Mayne) 1 17 Sailor, 25sec ... ... Passing the stand the fourth time Nea got her head in front of Grenadier, and the latter was leading May Be by three lengths, Cable next five lengths away. In the last round Nea went away from Grenadier, who was just in front of Cable, and the Wanganui horse breaking, Cable forged ahead, but could not catch Nea, who won a fast race by five lengths, Grenadier, distanced, third. The driver of J.H. got a severe shaking, and was stunned for a while. Robin then went on and won easily. Time, sinin 45sec. Dividend, .£3 10s.
