OBITUARY.

H. MERCER. Ottawa, October 30. The death is announced of Mr H. Merciei*, ex-Premier of Qixebec. In 1891, during Mr Mercier's Premiership, charges of corruption were preferred against the Cabinet,in consequence of certain railway scandals, and Lieutenant-Governor Angers dismissed Ministers from power. A further charge was preferred against Mr Mercier's administration, when it was discovered that letters of credit for 60,000d0l had been issued for stationery, while only 10,000dol worth had been supplied. A commission of enquiry exonerated Mr Mercier and the other Ministers in regard to the Chaleur Bay Railway, and only condemned Mr Mercier's political agent, Pacaud, and the contractor, Armstrong. The elections in Quebec took place Shortly afterwards, and resulted in the signal defeat of Mr Mercier, who resigned his seat and issued an address to his friends announcing his return to private life. He and Mr Pacaud were afterwards placed on trial for conspiracy to defraud, but were acquitted.

*T~ MRS FINDLAY. On October 31st one of the oldest settlers in the Rangitilrei district, Mrs Findlay, widow of the late Mr Alexander Findlay, died at her residence, Grange Cottage, Upper Tutaenui. The deceased lady was attacked by influenza at the same time as her late husband, and has only survived him for the short space of two months. Mrs Findlay was born in Aberdeenshire, in 1821, and came out to this Colony with her husband in 1859. From that time she has resided in the Rangitikei district. She leaves a grown up family of five daughters and two sons.

MRS LOCK. Mrs Lock, one of the oldest residents of Nelson, where she landed with her husband, Mr John Lock, sen., in 1855, died on October 27th. She and her husband celebrated their golden wedding on the 6th June last. Mrs Lock was 72 years of age. Her life was insured for <£soo in the Government Insurance Office. c. Mcdonald. An old identity of Cullensville, Mr Colin McDonald, aged 61 years, died at the Picton Hospital on Saturday of cancer. R. A. E. OWEN. A well-known Thames man, Mr R. A. R. Owen, teacher of music there for many years, has died at the Thames Hospital. REV FATHER MORRISSY. "We regret to learn of the death of the Rev Father Morrissy, of Westport, who died en Nov. 4 at 12.30 p.m. at the Presbytery, Boulcott street. The rev gentleman had been unwell for the past twelve months, and four months ago went to Sydnev for a change. He remained there for some time, after which he returned to Wellington, very little improved in health. Since his return he had been the guest of the Very Rev Father Devoy. Dr Cahill had been in constant attendance on him, and early last week, detected alarming symptoms, and advised the sufferer to prepare for the end. Since that time he gradually grew weaker, and passed away quietly. The deceased priest came to the Archdiocese about six years ago, and since that time was assistant to the Very Rev Father Walsh, Westport, where he was greatly esteemed by all on account of his zeal and kindly disposition.
