HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday; present, Councillors H. Cook (chairman), J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. Jillett, F. A. Majendie, H. A. Field, F. Bradey and G. Brown. The clerk of the Horowhenua County Council forwarded an account of the expenses incurred in the Otaki licensing district up to the 18th July last in administering the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, the proportionate share of the Hutt County being £l7 19s Bd. It was resolved that the clerk write and request that the Council may be supplied with an account showing the number of licensed houses, their situation, and the fees derived from them.

Copies of resolutions passed by a meeting of ratepayers at Paraparaumu in reference to tho expenditure of £250 on Lynch’s bridle track were received. It was decided to invite tenders for forming the track. Councillor Majendie gave notice of motion for rescinding the resolution. The Under-Secretary for Lands wrote to the Council stating that the Minister for Lands has not the sum of £4OOO at his disposal for the construction of the county road from Waikanae to Paraparaumu, and was therefore unable to place it on the estimates for the current year. It was resolved that the Minister for Lands be asked to receive a deputation from the Hutt County Council to lay before him the reasons in favour of the Government giving a grant in aid of the construction of the main county road between Wainui and Waikanae. Mr Travers waited on the Council in reference to the proposed road through Lynch’s, and said that the plans drawn up would be quite useless. It was resolved that the question of the position of the proposed road be left in the hands of Councillor Field. It was resolved that the clerk forward to the various contributing bodies a statement of receipts and expenditure in the licensing district of Wellington suburbs. Councillor Speedy and the clerk were authorised to wait on Mr Travers to obtain his opin ion in reference to the stopping of a disused road at Belmont, and exchanging it for a road which it is proposed to make there.

Accounts amounting to £522 14s 9d were passed for payment.

At the next meeting of the Hutt County Council, Councillor Majendie will move, “ That this Council considers the position of Mr Travers, as solicitor for the Welling-ton-Manawatu Railway Company, incompatible with his position as legal adviser to this Council, and that it is therefore desirable to appoint another solicitor.” The Hutt County Council have voted the sum of £3 3s as a subscription towards the County Councils’ Conference held in Wellington recently, and have sanctioned the appointment of their clerk (Mr H. D. Atkinson) as secretary to the County Councils’ Association.
