ATHLETICS.

At the annual meeting of the Amateur Atliletic Club a proposal will be made that the Club take up 25 shares in the Athletic Park Company.

The committee of the Amateur Athletic Club in their annual report, to be presented at the annual meeting on August 6th, congratulate the Club on winning the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association’s banner. The original team was twelve in number, but this was reduced by various causes to eight; nevertheless they succeeded in carrying off nine of the fifteen championships, besides gaining two seconds, and one third, thus scoring 52 points. The team consisted of Messrs llempton, Nathan, Gurr, Morpeth, Batger, Bailey, McCormack, and Kingsley. The Club’s spring and autumn meetings were both successful gatherings, the entries for

the former amounting to 281, and for the autumn to 234. The latter was the first of the eleven meetings held under the auspices of the Club at which ajprofit had been made. At the championship meeting in Dunedin, Mr McCormack put up a New Zealand record for throwing the hammer, viz., 100 ft 3in, and Mr Kingsley beat the standard for the pole jump, viz., 10ft. The president’s handsome challenge cup had been won by Mr W. T. Wynyard, who also had secured Mr Duthie’s trophy. The thanks of the Club were due to the president, Messrs J. Duthie, M.H.E., P. F. Tancred, L. Tripp, C. A. Knapp, H. Price, 11. Gully, A. de B. Brandon, D. Barnett, J. H. Williams and James King for special prizes and donations. The financial position of the Club is very satisfactory. The receipts amounted to <£3o7 Os 2d, and the expenditure to .£266 13s 3d, leaving a balance in hand of <£4o 6s lid. The principal items of receipts were—subscriptions, <.£B7 6s; gate money, =£B9 6s lid, and entrance fees <£3l 10s 6d. The leading items of expenditure were —prizes, ,£95 9s 6d ; expenses of team to Dunedin, <£44 12s 2d. Mr C. A. Knapp had been appointed local officer of the New Zealand A.A. Association, and henceforth all applications for re-instatement and for mixed meetings would only be granted on his re-

commendation to the Association’s head- l quarters at Christchurch. The thanks of the Club were due to Mr W. Wright for the use of the Island Bay racecourse; to Mr J. W. Davis for his ever ready assistance ; to Mr Batkin, their undefatigable honorary starter, and all those who assisted at the Club’s various sports meetings. Mr L. J. Nathan has presented the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association with a handsome cup for competition during the coming season.
