The first of a series of popular lectures was delivered at Petone last week by Dr Chappie before a large audience, the subject being " Milk and Meat in Elation to Health and Disease/' The lecturer dealt witn the health aspect of the question, and amonc a great deal of useful information pointed c lit that the prevalent belief that cancer is due to the consumption of * cancerous beef was a popular fallacy. There was, he said, no true cancer in cattle, the* disease usually termed cancer being; actinomycosis. He also expressed the opinion that the decrease in the typhoid rate in Wellington during the past typhoid season was largely due to the City Council's commendable effort to cope with insanitaryconditions. On the motion of Mr Horn*. the lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Sir Eobert Stout, Sir James Hector and Mr A. S. Paterson will give other lectures during c he winter. The Manawatu Btaiular<L says that thirty-nine tenders were received the other day for a bush felling contract in the district.
