AN ABSCONDER ARRESTED.

I Sydney, June 15. A man calling himself Palmer, supposed to be an absconder named Bailey, from New Zealand, has been arrested in Dubbo. He recently lodged .£9BO in New Zealand bank notes in a bank at Orange, but afterwards withdrew it in notes and gold, and then went to Dubbo. Colonel Hume has received a cablegram announcing tho arrest of this man with i!900 in his possession, and stating that ho confesses to be Bailey. A constable will bo sent over at onco to bring the man back to New Zealand. Bailey was a stock-drover and dealer. On the 28th March last ho is known to have arrived at Palmerston North, having a mob of 300 cattle under his care. This ho was responsible for, holding charge of thorn as agent for numerous small settlers in tho Taranaki district. While at Palmerston he sold somo of tho cattle, taking the rest on to Hawke's Bay. The balance ho sold in and around tho Waipukurau district, the date being set down as tho 7th April. Two day& afterwards he went to Napier and received from tho firm by whom the auction sale was effected a cheque for the sum of .£1135. Ho secured cash at one of the local banks for the cheque, taking the lot in .£2O noted. Then ho returned, presumably to the Taranaki district, but as he did not put in an appearance in duo course there were not a few anxious enquiries concerning his whereabouts. There being an element of suspicion owing to his non-appearance, the polico were communicated with, and they traced him to Napier and from thence to Palmerston North. At that point ho had completely disappeared from official cognisance. Somo averred that he had gone to Coolgardie to the goldfields, and others asserted that he was safe in San Francisco. It now appears that Bailey reached Dubbo, in New South Wales. His arrest in Auckland was reported shortly after his departure, but it turned out that the police had secured the wrong man. Bailey, it is said, was responsible to clients for considerably more than what ho sold in tho Palmerston and Hawke's Bay districts. Immediately after Bailey's disappearance Mr Freeman R. Jackson, auctioneer, Wauganui, offered a reward of ,£SO for his capture.
