NOTES.
BY FANCIER. Evidently the Christchurch people are so full of conceit of their own collies that they do nob think it possible for the latest Wellington crack (Air F. A. Kebbell’s Newmarket Ruff) to beat them. The following, from a Chrislchutch paper, is rather good:—“In my last week’s notes I stated that a Wellington correspondent had a bet of a new hat against Newmarket Ruff taking all tho collies down in New Zealand, and the other day I faff a prominent collie man return from ihe Waikari collie trial wearing a very shabby headgear. By what he told me he is w it lug for some cheap hats from the Empire City." “Fancier" would like to make a bet of a new ha| with tho Kennel Editor of the Christchurch paper that Ruff will beat any collie at present in New Zealand, under ci really capable judge.
We hear tha’ the Christchurch Dog Society have decided to discontinue holding their show in November, and that the show this yea" is to be held during the winter mouiiu. This seems very unwise, because November is sure y a bet el* Lin eof the year. By holding the show before November they will lose the entries of all the dogs at present in quarantine —a very serious loss, indeed.
S me timo ago we noted that two Great Dano puppies had arrived in Lyttelton ser s.s. Tulune, and vie have now ascertained that they were sene by Air J. Dc Beer, of Melbourne, to Ashburton. L’iur dog belongs to Mr Max Friedlander and the bitch to Mr Plugo Friedlander. They are fine, healthy, and well developed puppies. The dog’s colour is a mixture of fawn and blue, and does not look as attractive as his sister’s, which is quite blue. They are already cropped, but not close enough.
Our American cousins are not in the lubit of doing things by halves. We havo it on the authority of Forest and Stream that there has been a Bill brought into tho State Legislature which its introducers wish to be in force in Boston and within a thirty miles radius for the protection of pr perty and the inhabitants against dogs The principal provisions are as follow:—“The 1 cense for each male deg to bo lOdol., and 20dol. for females ; all damages done by dogs to be paid from tho dog license fund ; licenses to be refused or annulled for all dogs that bark or disturb their neighbourhood ; severe fines with loss of license to be imposed on all female degs found at large when in fever j and the police are
required to capture such dogs at such time, for which they shall be paid odol. for extra hezmlous work ; the police to be required to capture all d gs at largo without a collar, sui ably inscribed, and for which they shall receive 2dol. for extra services." No doubt some such measure would lind favour wi h the doghaters of this country. Wo fancy that there is not much likelihood of it becoming law even in the Slate of MassachuC? setts.
At the annual meeting of the Auckland Kem.el Club on Thursday last, the report showed that tlm revenue had considerably decreased, but. s:i 11 there was a credit balance of £7. His Excellency the Governor was elected patron. A number of special prizes were promised for next show. We congratulate the Auckland Kennel Club on their being in such a flourishing condition. Mr H. Zander, of Ashburton an old black and tan fancier, has purchased from a Christchurch resident a dog bred by Mr F. Biegs. He is nice’y made, show's good symmetry and fair markings. His tun is rather light, and lie could do with more coat, but for all that wo think bu can win in the over seven pounds class, unless Mr Power’s Zinnny lias gained weight and competes against him. • • • • At the Berlin University each “corps" of students has its own particular joint stock dog. F rm«rly, a poodle was the dog chiefly favoured by the students. Now the fashion is to have cither a strikingly handsome or a strikingly ugly dog ;it does not matter which. Neithor is it important to what breed it belongs. i • i # The sheep dog which won at the recent trials at luvercll and Glen Inties, New South Wales, Mr T. Black’s roughcoated collie Glcnloth, was of high breeding, being from Harold Cadell’s Tam worth Girl, by Champion Laird of Wyoming. • • • • A notable incident of the Manches‘cr Dog Show was the sale of Mr Enoch Wellburn’s wire haired fox terrier Roper’s Nutcrack at catalogue price, £l5O, to Sir Humphrey de Trafiord.
