Our cable messages inform us that the Premier of New South Wales has cabled to the Hon Mr Seddon with regard to the control of Samoa. The following is tho text of the cablegram : —“ With reference to your proposals regarding Samoa, we favour the solo protection of Great Britain being extended over Samoa, providing the other Powers consent, in preference to any colony exercising the rights of a Sovereign Stato —without the means of enforcing order. We shall instruct our AgentGeneral accordingly. — Geo. R. JDibbs, Chief Secretary, Sydney.” Two of the outer piers of the Opunake Jetty have been carried away. The piles were honeycombed by the teredo, and an unusually heavy sea snapped them,
