The inhabitants of Queenstown, in the Wakatipu district, had an unpleasant experience last week. A slip of earth took place in One-mile Creek during the heavy weather, so that the water supply for the town was literally mud for two or three days, and it was totally unfit for domestic use. The silt settled down and in most instances choked up the service pipes. A Viennese undertaker has turned out a richly - decorated coffin for a millionaire customer, who, before he became qualified to occupy it, stipulated that it should contain twenty small incandescent lamps, which were to be kept alight for three years after his decease. The system of numbering the hours of the day from one to twenty-four has been adopted by the Italian railroads, and is in use for all time schedules.
