RAILWAY CONCESSIONS.
Tke Railway Commissioners have just decided upon making certain concessions which will be greatly appreciated by two classes of the community, viz., the small settlers and artisans. Hitherto settlers requiring bone dust in small parcels have had to pay a higher proportionate rate of railway f roight than those who could afford to order bone dust in quantities from two tons upwards. It has now beon deter--1 mined to remove this anomaly by placing parcels of bone dust from scwt upwards under class 3, which will put both large and small settlers on pretty equal terms in this matter. The other alteration referred to relates to “ commutation tickets,” otherwise known as workmen’s tickets (available for second-class only), which have, so far, been issued only in parcels of 50, available for two months. In many cases where a workman had temporary employment some distance alone: the line he was either unable to purchase at once or did not need so large a number a s 50 commutation tickets, and as 50 was the minimum that could be issued in one parcel, lie had to pay the ordinary fare. Henceforth, however, these commutation tickets are to bo sold in parcels of 12, available for a fortnight. They will be issued as nearly as possible at the same proportionate rate as that at which the parcels of 50 are now obtainable. The Commissioners have also decided tomake a reduction in the tonnage dues at Port Chalmers.
