Information has reached the Lands Department that the recent heavy rains have done considerable damage to the new roads on the Cheviot estate, especially between the township and the port. The necessary repairs are to be made as speedily as possible. At a land sale this week in Otago, when the Popotunoa estate of Mr James Logan, near Ashburton, 5350 acres, was offered, all the lots were eagerly purchased at once at good prices by the settlers in the district, the total sum' realised baing .£11,233. So much for the stories of depression.
