A dairy prodixce dealer named John Mackay, a resident of Port Melbourne, found a burglar in his shop at 2 o'clock one Sunday morning. Fearing that he would be attacked, Mackay pulled the trigger of tho revolver and the charge exploded. The burglar staggered and fell. On re-lighting the candle which had been extinguished in the confusion, Mackay saw that the man was in a dying condition. He hurried oil for the doctor and the police but on his return the man was dead. The burglar proved to be Alfred May, aged 24, a ne'er-do-well, who had been convicted half a dozen times. At the inquest a verdict was returned of justifiable homicide.
