CITY ITEMS.
Owing to the Easter holidays the next meeting cf the Public Works Committee of tho City Council will not bo held until Thursday, 29th hist. The ordinary meeting ot the City Council will lie held on the same evening, after tho meeting of the Committee.
The Corporation hank account stood as follows at the end of last month:—Cr. balance City Improvements Loan Act. .£9.121 (is Sd : dr. balance general account, .£9281 Us lid; cr. balance drainage loan account. .£135,747 Jls Od : dr. balance cemetery account. JC564 lis Id: dr. balance To Aro reclamation account, .£SSOO 2s 2d. The rates outstanding on 2Sth February amounted to .£OS72 17s 9d. and the rents outstanding at the same date, £'so9 19s sd.
The quarterly purple lecture of the L0.0.F., M.U.. Wellington district, was held at the Loyal Britannia Lodge last week, the following officers and deputies being present:—E. Mothes, Prov. Grand Master; G. Jordan, Prov. Deputy G.M. ; J. Kershaw, Prov. Secretary: E. Smith, Prov. Warden; S. R. Johnson, Past Prov. Grand Master. Britannia Lodge —T. Madeley, P.P.G.M: Past Grands. J. Eemington, W. Madeley. H. McCarthy, T. Evans, C. .Jacob, E. Laurent, J. Brown. Apologies were received for the absence of S. Waters, P.P.G.M., Antipodean Lodge, P.P.G.M.'s J. Smith, jun., I. Clark, J. Martin, W. Guise; Past Grand's H. Blair, O. Daly, .1 Avery, D. Henry, F. G. Thirkell. The following brothers were advanced to the respective degrees:—Elective Secretaries' Degree. A. E. Cousins and A. Dempsey ; Past Vice-Grands' Degree, W. 11. Payne, G. 1). Beharell and A. Dempsey; Past Noble Grand's Degree, A. Munro. Bro. S. E. Johnson was advanced to the Past Prov. Grand Master's Degree by Past Prov. G.M. J. Smith, jun., who also, at the request of the Prov. G.M.. made a presentation of a Past Prov Grand Master's jewel to Bro. S. E. Johnson, and in doing so complimented him on the able manner in which he had fulfilled the duties of his office. The recipient returned thanks to tho District for the kind presentation, and to Bro. Smith for his kindly remarks in making the presentation, and he also expressed his determination to do what he possibly could to still further advance the interests of the Order.
The Wellington Hospital Trustees met on Tuesday afternoon. Present—Messrs Eraser (chairman), Collins, Kirk, Willeston. lb-own, Harris, Danks and Rev Van Staveren. A letter was received from Dr Prance, offering his> services again for the next two years as honorary physician to the Hospital, and tendering his thanks to the Trustees for their past services. It was decided to accept Dr France's offer. The Trustees decided to settle the claim of the Clerk of Works for salary during the extension of time granted to the contractor for the new wing of the Hospital, the contractor having become insolvent. The Medical Superintendent was granted leave of absence for a few days. A return was presented showing that the number of visits paid to the Hospital by the honorary medical stall during the past two years was as follows :—Dr Gilion, 521 ; Dr Fell, 291 ; Dr Collins, 264; Dr Mackenzie, 240 - Dr Cahill, 220 ; Dr Adams, 150; Dr Martin, 139; Dr Grace, 42; Dr France, 3. It was explained that Dr Martin was absent in England during part of the time, and that Drs Grace and France only attended when they were called in. >\ Another return showed that the number of out-patients treated at the institution during tho two weeks ending March 14th was 137, 121 of whom possessed Trustees' orders. Duringthe same period oil visits were paid by the out-patients, while 474 bottles of medicine were supplied, 170 being paid for at the rate of Is a bottle. The secretary (Mr H. Gaby) gave 04 out-patients' orders, Rev 11. Van Staveren 32, the chairman (Mr F. H. Fraser) 11, Mr J. Danks 5, Mr G. H. Baylis 4, and Messrs E. C. Kirk, J. Collins, C. E. Willeston, L. L. Harris and G. Allen 1 each. During the same period 40 persons went into the Hospital as in-patients, 28 on the secretary's orders.
At the annual meeting of the United Association Football Club last Tuesday, JDr Newman, M.H.R., was appointed president. Fifteen new members were elected. The Committee of the Wellington Horticultural and Florists' Society met last Tuesday, Mr L. G. Iteid in the chair, wdien the prize-list, amounting to JM-8, was passed, and will be paid next week. It was decided to hold the Chrysanthemum Show on April 25th and 20th. Already many promises of exhibits have been received, and blooms are expected from Nelson, Blenheim and Napier.
