HARBOUR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board was held yesterday week. Present—Messrs J. Jack (chairman), Speedy, Petherick, Booth, Gale, Fraser, the Mayor, and Captain Eose. The Chairman reported that the credit balance at the bank was ,£991 10s 6d, the imprest wages account .£3BO, and the amount on fixed deposit .£27,000. The amount required for payment was .£4098 lis Id, made up as follows:—Accounts and wages, .£3087 14s 9d; progress on contracts, .£579 10s; salaries for October, ,£431 6s 4d. The Chairman reported that letters of condolence were sent as directed to Mrs W. H. Levin and to Mrs George Beetham, and that those ladies replied thanking the members of the board for their sympathy ; that the Otago Harbour Board had consented to give a definite extension of the charter of dredge 222 for two months, and, unless required for urgent work by that board would extend the charter for a further period of two months; that the committee appointed by the board at its last meeting with power to act in the matter of the proposal for a holiday on Wednesday, October 25th, had conferred with a committee of the council of the Chamber of Commerce, with whom they waited on the Public Works Committee of the City Council, and that it had been decided by the committee not to declare a public holiday on that day, also that the City Council had adopted the same course. The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended:—1. That an auction sale be held of unclaimed goods, including therein four cases of electric machinery marked Eedhill. 2. That, if suitable terms can be arranged, the sale be placed in the hands of Mr W. F. Shortt. 3. That notice be given by advertisement that tenders will be called in March next for the supply of 105 tons of hoop steel and of one ton of studs, to be delivered in September and November, 1894. 4. That timber gates be erected at the entrances to the reserve of the Hunter street endowment. 5." That the footpath adjoining the site of the old Queen's bond be straightened and flagged in accordance with the agreement made in October, 1890, with the City Council. 6. That no action be taken in the matter of a circular letter from the Wairarapa North County Council, seeking the co-operation'' of the board in order to amend the law so as to throw the incidence of local taxation upon the unimproved value of land. The recommendations were agreed to. The board then went into committee.
