EDUCATIONAL.
EDUCATION BOARD. - ♦ At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Education Board on Wednesday there were present—Bev . J. Paterson, Dr. Newman, Messrs. F. H. Fraser, W. A. Fitzherbert, J. Young, and G. Beetham. In the absence of the chairman Dr. Newman was voted to the chair. Accounts amounting to £3415 were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to Misses Clara Wood and Constance Weston, of the Mount Cook schools. ' The chairman (Mr. J. B. Blair), having been called out*of town, was granted leave of absence. Mr B. Parker wrote offering to proceed to Masterton every fourth Saturday to teach singing. The offer was agreed to. The report of the committee as to the general repairs required at Mount Cook schools was received, and on'; the motion of Mr Fraser it was resolved to" pall for a detailed estimate of the cost, to be sent in by the next meeting. The Ohau School Committee recommended the board to sell the present school site and procure another on higher ground. Mr J. Young endorsed the recommendation of the committee. It was resolved that they should beaeked to forward a list of suitable sites.
A Makuri public meeting forwarded a resolution asking for a grant towards the erection of a hall, there being no public meeting place there. The building could, they pointed out, be utilised afterwards as a school. Dr Newman thought that this was one qf the places at which a school would shortly be necessary, and though they could not assist towards building a hall they could write and find out what number of children there were of school age in the vicinity. The teacher at Mauriceville asked iM additions to the residence, the house beifl too small. Eeferred to the architect for W report. A requisition was received from Scarborough for an aided school. Mr McArdle stated, that in time of flood children would not be able to get to the school; and on his proposal the request was referred to the committee. ,
The Wadestown teacher again alluded to the overcrowding at that school, and asked that room for 120 pupils be granted. Tenders for Mitchelltown road, additions Newtown school, and residence at Paikakariki, which are due in a few days, were, with the Wadestown application, referred to the Finance Committee.
The board then went into committee, and on resuming resolved that they could not recommend an increase to Mrs C. A. Francis (Mount Cook Infant School) ; that the new /regulations would provide for an increase asked by Miss Nita Johnston (Ngahauranga), and that Miss Mary Yorke (Greytown), receive an increase to £6O.
A complaint by Edward Smith (Masterton) of excessive punishment to his child was referred to the inspector for his report. _^_____^____^
