The Premier to-day received several deputations, the most important being one from the Harbour Board, vgoo asked that the duty on dement should bo remitted, pointing ont that the duty was imposed after the works bad been etareed. The Premier replied :—(1) There were cement works in Otago and Auckland ; (2) The question of protection v. freetrade was involved j (3) If granted to Napier the same concession would be asked for elsewhere. Ho recommended the member for the district to get the House to pass a special resolution dealing with the question. A deputation* cf Volunteer officers asked the Government to take over the Drillshed, or advance enough to pay off the debt on the building ; tbe three local corps to ropay it out of their capitation. Reeves and asked him to use his influence in obtaining a vote of £2500 from the Government towards the exhibition of Now Zealand produce, proposed to be held in Cbilßtohuroh. It was stated that they proposed to make the exhibition permanent and a place for imparting teohnioal education. Mr Reeves expressed a hope that the Industrial Association would establish an institution for the advancement of practical technical education. In such ease he would be able' to give them a subsidy •8 he had to the technical classes in Dunedin and Wanganui. With regard to the exhibition, he could not promise anything definite till he had consulted his o lleagues, but ba thought that at least. they-rnight rest assured of a subsidy "of "£rfor every pound of an« sum subscribed towards the object, Me'ssrs Thompson, M H.R., and A.
