; 'SINGLE CORNER.' Played in the Dundee Draughts Club between Mr H. Shearer and Mr A. Scott in the second round for the Champion Medal. For the score and notes of this and the following game we are indebted to Mr Wm. Taylor :
(a) As your readers will observe, the above game is played on book lines till this stage. Nevertheless it may prove interesting to many draughts players as showing how the undernoted critical ending came in view. 24-27 is the usual move here; but Shearer, after a long pause, preferred original play, thinking, no doubt, he had a grip.
WHITE.
(u) Keeping the King on square 19 in check. (c) Very well played, the idea being to relieve the man on square 2. (d) 15-18 is much better. (e) This now forces the play nicely. (f) A beautiful move, and one that brings the play to a finish. Now the query is, Could Mr Shearer force a win at any stage of the above position ? DRAUGHTS IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
