TRADES COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the Trades Council was held last week, the President, Mr D. P. Fisher, being in the chair. A letter was read from the Bon J. E. Jenkinson. Ghrietchurch, aoceding to the council s request that he Would address a public gathering on his arrival at Wellington, as ho fully recognised the great good that must emanate from an acknowledged head of unions, suoh as a Trades and Labour Council should be. A letter was received from the Premier's Offioe, as follows : 'Sir,— I bava been directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th ultimo, addressed to the Postmaster-Generol, in which, on behalf of your council, you suggest the establishment of Government tailoring workshops, and in reply I am to state the matter shall receive consideration. I have, &c, Alex Willis.' A latter was received from E. A. Haggen, master worker, Knights of Labour, Woodville, in which he stated that he would be happy to take charge of the Ballanoe memorial list in that district, and congratulating the counoil on the steps takeu. It was resolved, 'That tho oouncil a 6 a whole form the Ballauce Memorial Committee, and that R. A. Loughnan, Esq., New Zealand Tims, and E. T. Gilloo, Esq., Evening Post, two of the treasurers, act as ex officio members of that committee.' The Permanent Eleotoral Committee reported that at the oouference held between that committee and a deputation from the Wellington Liberal Association the following resolution hod been adopted :— * That it be a reoommendatlon to our respective bodies that a committee be set up, consisting of 12 representatives from each"; and, further, that there be added thereto one for each 20 or fraction of 20 members oontainod in each organised body in Wellington, which agrees to united action.' The Labour Paper Committee was granted an extension of time for a week, in which to bring up its report.
