EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this body was held on Wednesday. Presont Messrs J. It. Biair (chairman), Buohanan, MoOsrdle, Young, Fraser, anl Dr Newman. The pay sheet, amounting to £2812 Is Id, was passed.

The carpenter reooramended that the Wainui-o mata Sohool should be shored up. It was left iu the hands of the chairman to see if the cost of the proposed work was moderate, and if so to have tha work done, If not the matter will be brought before the board.

Resignations were received as follow Camilla Gaudlu, pupil teacher, Mount Cook Infants’; Gertrude Thomson, pupil teacher, Te Aro; Ella Barron, pupil teacher, Masterton ; Emma Riomeuscbneidar, assistant, Matsterton. The resignations were accepted. Helen Kean asked to be transferred from Mauriceville to Mastertoo, whioh was granted, and it was intimated to the Master, ton Committee that Mr Johnson be transferred from the Infant Sohool to the Main Sohool, Miss Kean to take hU place. Jessie Nairn, pupil teacher, Hutt, applied to be transferred to Khandallah, and for another month's ho’idav on the score of illhealth. The transfer asked for was refused, aod the mouth’s holiday granted. A petition was road, signed by 48 householders of Te Nui, asking that the teacher’s residence should be remodelled and made habitable, it being in a vory dilapidated condition, and that shelter sheds should be provided for the use o?. the children. Mr McCardle proposed that the architect be instructed to prepare plans, and Invito tenders for the ereotion of shelter sheds, whioh was seconded by Mr Buohanan and oarried.

John McKenzie, Mauriceville, asked to be transferred nearer the sea. The application was refused, the board having no opening for such a change. The Terrace Committee wroto recommending Sara Fraser for promotion as assistant. The matter was postponed until tho next meeting, the ohairmaa to make enquiries in the meanwhile. ’lhe Manakau Committee wrote recommending Kate Hollis as assistant teacher in place of Miss Nelson, appointed by the board. The vacancy was ordered to be advertised. Ellen J. Levy, assistant, Petone, applied for two months’ leave of absenoe, whioh was granted. The Pahiatua Committee applied for the salary of Assistant Robert Darroch to be increased. The board deolded to put the sohool on the same footing as regards the assistant’s salary as Featherston and Grey-, town. The committee also asked for additions to the teacher’s residence, on whioh question the ohalrman was instructed to oonßult the architect as to the oost. Mr John de Mey, drill instructor to tho board, applied for an Increase of his travelling allowance. The consideration of tho request was adjourned for a month. 'The board decided that tenders should be called for gravelling the Greytown Sohool playground, the acceptance of the tender to be left in the hands of Mr Buchanan. Tho sum of £3 was voted towards levelling the sohool grounds at Porirua. It was decided that the inside of the old classroom at YVaihinga should be painted at tha first favourable opportunity. A letter was read from Mr A. BoltoD, asking what aid tho board would give towards opening an aided sohool at Tiraumea. The board decided that enquiries should be made as to what number of children would be likely to attend. It was decided that repairs to the fence at Newtown School should be proceeded with. The board came to the conclusion that it was not neoessary to fix a date for another special election of a school committee at Paikakariki. A month’s notice would have to be given, which would bring the date up towards the end of March ; and as tho annual election takes place in April, they resolved to take no aotion in the matter. The erection of a shelter Bhed at Whakatakl was ordered to bo put iu hand at once, and tho purchase of a new clock for the same school was also authorised. The recommendation of tho board’s committee with regard to the levelling of the playground at the Clyde quay Sohool was adopted, and tho board’s architeot was instructed to oall for tenders for the work,
