AUCKLAND ITEMS.

(press association.) Auckland, February 21. A well-known resident of Whangarel, E. Coder, who arrived ia the Colony in 1840, landing at the Boy of Islands, ia dead. Cnfler wae born in Franoe. He was one of the ambulance branch of the French army at the battle of Waterloo. In the early days of the Colony he purchased land at Akaroa, Canterbury, from the Natives, He waß 97 years of age. Another letter has been addressed by Mr W. L. Rees, M.R.R., to the Premier, urging the absolute necessity that the Native land question should be dealt with at once by Parliament. Professor Pond has been elected president of the Auckland Institute.
