The Hawke's Bay Herald is bitterly opposed to Home Rule, and has frequently distinguished itself by the virulence of its attacks upon the Gladstonians. It now apparently descends to garbling cablegrams in order to discredit the principle it opposes. It has actually printed the following as a cable message :—ln the debate on the Rome Rule Bill (sic) Mr Chamberlain dwelt upon the danger of the Irish taking advantage of England's emergency in the event of war to extort complete autonomy for Ireland.
