ARRIVAL OF THE COPTIC

The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Coptic, from London, via way ports, arrived here at 7.10 on Friday night. She left the Royal Albert Docks on Friday, December 23rd, at 2.46 pm, having been delayed 24 hours in dock owing to fog. After a fine run down the Channel she arrived at Plymouth at 945 pm, on the 24th December. After taking on board mails and passengers, she left for Teneriffe at 2.35 pm on Christmas Day. Moderate easterly and variable winds with confused swell were experienced throughout the run to Santa Cruz, Teneriffe, which port was reached at 6.45 pm on the 30th December. After landing passengers and coaling, she proceeded at 5.30 am on the 31st December for Capetown. Light variable NE and easterly breezes were met with, followed by heavy squalls, rain and thunder till crossing the Line on the 7th January; from thence moderate SB trades to latitude 18 south, thence southerly winds until arrival at Cape, town at 6 am on the 17th January. The Coptic was docked immediately for coaling purposes, and after taking on passengers and sufficient coal, she* proceeded at 6.25 pm for Hobart; unusually fine weather being experienced throughout the passage until arrival at that port at 3.50 pm on the sth February. After landing passengers, cargo and coaling she proceeded on her journey at 11.36 a.m. on the fith February for this port, meeting with light and southwesterly winds and _ fine weather throughout the passage, and arriving here as stated. Owing to so small a complement of passengers the entertainments were few, but as there was a little musical talent on board many pleasant evenings were spent; cricket and deck sports were well kept up and greatly enjoyed.
