THE CABINET.

FINAL RE-ADJUSTMENT OF PORTFOLIOS. In Cabinet on Thursday Ministers finally readjusted the several portfolios as follows : Hon J. Ballance —Premier, Colonial Treasurer, Commissioner of Customs, Commissioner of Stamps, Government Insurance and Public Trust Office. Sir Patrick A. Buckley— Colonial Secretary and Attorney-General. Hon R. J. Seddon— Public Works, Mines, Defence, and in addition takes over Marine. Hon W. P. Reeves— Education, Labour, and takes over from Mr Cadman Hospitals and Charitable Aid. Hon J. McKenzie— Lands, Agriculture, and Native Lands Purchase. Hon A. J. Cadman —Native Affairs and Justice, to which is now attached Native Land Courts ; he also takes charge of all legislation affecting the Native race. Hon J. G. Ward —Postmaster-General. Hon Jas. Carroll —Member of the Executive representing the Native race. .As has been already intimated the Native Minister takes the Justice Portfolio because he has to be in charge of the Native Lands Court, and because his hands are full with the Native legislation, on which subject he has to be constantly in communication with the Chief Judge of that Court. Because of this plethora of employment Mr Cadman has been relieved of the bus-ness of the Charitable Aid Department. For the same reason the portfolio of Marine, which it was intended Mr Cadman should take over, has been given to the Hon Mr Seddon. In addition it has been determined to hand the Native Land Purchase Dapartment over to the Department of Lanas. The Hon Mr Reeves takes over the Charitable Aid, as that department has in some degree to be worked with the Department of Education, the portfolio of which he, of course, retains. (press association. ) Masterton, May 26. The Masterton Assembly of the Knights. of Labour have passed a resolution thanking the Government for the interest displayed in the working classes by the appointment of a Minister for Labour.
