Strained relations at present exist between the Wairarapa River Board and the Natives, who claim to have fishing rights in the lake. A certain amount of friction has taken place in consequence of the determination of the Board to take steps to open an outlet from the lake to the sea, so as to prevent any recurrence of the floods that from time to time have been a source of loss and annoyance to the settlers living in the neighbourhood of the lake. This intention, which was to be carried into effect this week, was communicated to the Natives, and the Natives gave verbal notice of their resolve to assert their proprietory fishing rights, and prevent any work of the kind being undertaken, more especially as they already have their nets down in the lake. The. Board accordingly communicated with the Government, and it is hoped that a settlement may 7 be arrived at which will obviate any unpleasantness.
