THE LABOUR BUREAU.
A MYSTERIOUS BLUNDER. (PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Gisborne, May 25. In response to the general statement that labour for buahfelling was scaroe in this district, the Labour Bureau sent a man here to investigate. After staying here for a few days he left, and the Bureau sent from Auckland and Wellington 23 men, intimating that more would follow in a few days. These men landed here penniless, without any provision having been made for them. They were without food from Friday evening till Saturday at noon, when they intimated their starving condition to Sergeant-Major Moore, who provided them with a meal, and at once wired to the Bureau for instructions to maintain them until they obtained work. During the afternoon he received instructions to provide for them till Monday. On Monday, after a little trouble, eight men succeeded in finding employment. The lest have been tramping the country, and ten returne 1 to town last night hungry and worn out, having been unable to obtain work. Sergt.Mujor Moore is maintaining them until the Bureau makes same provision . for them. The men state that they have been misled by the Department, which, they say, told them they would be provided with work, tents and tools immedi itely on their arrival here, and also that a scale of pay’ had been arranged with bush-owners, whereas the men declare that no ouch provision appears to have been made.
Gisborne, May 26. All the men who were sent here by the Labour Bureau have at last obtained employment, Two who were quite unfit for bush work, for which they were sent here, have obtained casual work in gardens about town.
