THE LATE HON. JOHN MARTIN’S FUNERAL.

The funeral of the late Hon John Martin took place at the Karori Cemetery on Thursday morning in the presence of one of the largest assemblies that has attended a ceremony of this description for many years back. The procession started at 9.30 from the private residence of the deceased in Gliuznee street, where a service was first conducted by the Rev C. S. Ogg, of St. Andrew’s Church. There were a large number of well known citizens present, amongst whom were : —The Premier (Hon J. Ballance), the Hon R. J. Seddon, Sir Robert Stoat, the Very Rev Dr Watters, the Revs Father Devoi, H. Van Staveren, J. K. Elliott, Drs Ewart and McKenzie, Messrs W. McLean, M.H.R., H. J. Elliott, G. Hutchison, M.H.R., and J. C. Gavin. His Excellency tlie Acting-Governor sent his carriage, and was represented by his private secretary, Mr G. P- Knight. The chief mourners were the four sons of the deceased, Mr R. O’Connor (deceased’s son-in-law), and Mr C. Tringham. The Rev Mr Ogg also read the burial service at the grave, which is next to that of Mrs Martin, late wife of the deThe late Hon John Martin’s will was opened after the funeral on Thursday morning. The property is left in equal proportions amongst his 10 children. Under the last, property tax assessment, the estate of deceased was valued at L 120.000.
