WELLINGTON DEBATING SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above Society was held on Thursday in Room No. 7, Exchange Buildings. Mr 11. B. Bridge occupied the chair in the absence of the President (Mr W. Tustin), through domestic affliction. _ The Secretary read the annual report, particulars of which have already appeared in these columns. On the motion of Mr Cehen, seconded by Mr Meyers, the report and balance-sheet were adopted. The Chairman then said that it was customary for the President to deliver the annual address, but in his absence, the cause of which all regretted, the duty of saying a few words would devolve upon him. Good work of an educational nature had been done during the session, but bad attendances had done much to injure the Society. In reference to the advisability of carrying on the Society, he thought it would be _ well to carry on under increased subscription. It was awkward that at least six members of the Wellington Society belonged to the Union Debating Society. This had affected the attendance in no small degree. He would like to move a hearty vote of thanks to Mr F. Bacon (secretary), who, under considerable

difficulties, had done a great deal for the Society. (Applause).' After considerable discussion, Air F. Cohen moved 1 I hat this Society continue its existence.’ The motion was seconded by Mr J. Meyers, and on being put to the. meeting was carried. The election of officers was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows :—President, Mr E. Jones ; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Cohen and J. Higginbotham ; secretary, Mr J. Meyers ; treasurer, Mr D. Duncan ; committee, Messrs Dark, McKay, W. G. Tustin, _ and T. Meyers ; auditors, Messrs J. H. Shine and H. Baillie. With regard to the refreshments provided, at the meetings, Mr F. Bacon moved that the refreshments be provided for the Society as heretofore. Carried. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers, the Chairman, and a special one to the President for his presentation of a medal to the Society for competition, concluded the meeting.
