Intelligence from Mauritius Island states that a hurricane has swept the country, destroying half the crops and driving 14 ships ashore. A large number of deaths are also reported. Mosambique, May 21. The hurricane which swept over the Mauritius was exceptionally violent. Twenty - four churches, chapels,/ or colleges were blown down, while many of the sugar mills were wrecked. It is reported that fifteen hundred lives were lost in the storm, while the number of those injured is stated to amount to thousands, and hundreds of families have been rendered homeless. Twenty - nine steamers have been wrecked along the Mauritius coast. The Lord M <yor of London has opened a subscription list in aid of the distressed. Adelaide, May 23. A cable message from Mauritius says it is estimated that, in consequence of the fearful storm which ha 3 devastated the island, the crop of sugar this year will only reach 60,000 tons. This is about half the usual yield.
