(press association.) Dunedin, April 28. At a meeting of shorthand writers tonight it was decided to form a Shorthand Writers’ Association. At a meeting of women held this afternoon a resolution was carried to establish a Woman’s Franchise ljengue to obtain Parliamentary enfranchisement of women in New Zealand, with its headquarters in Dunedin, power being taken to open branches in all centres of population. The Council to consist of women of 18 years and upwards. The subscription was fixed at £l. Men may be hon. members on payment of 10s per annum. The League having been formed, Lady Stout was appointed president, apd a number of vice-presidents and a cammittee of 12 were appointed. Dunedin, April 29. The Hon R. Seddon reached town tonight. Ha proceeds to Kaitangata tomorrow, where he will address a public meeting. News has been received of the death of Mr E. W. Humphreys, ex-M.H.R. for Christchurch, from cancer. Dunedin, April 30. The Burns monument was handed over to the city to-day by Mr Robert Chapman. Complimentary addresses were delivered by Dr Stuart and Messrs Cargili, Craig, Russell and others. New Plymouth, April 28. Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., addressed his constituents last night, when there was no standing room in the hall. A vote of thanks and confid3nce was passed. New Plymouth, May 2.

At the Police Court to-day, -Tohn Hay, greengrocer, of Woitara, was fined £25 for having tobacco in his possession for which the Customs duty had not been paid. Defendant’s son stated he bought the tobacco from a hawker in Lyttelton for 3a 6d par lb. Auckland, April 28. H.M.S. Goldfinch sails this morning for the Chatham Islands, but returns in about ten days. A deputation waited on the Hon Mr Cadman to-day to protest against the export of rock oysters from the Bay of Islands. He said he intended to devise some scheme for the conservation of the oyster fishing industry. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Jubilee lustitute for the Blind took place to-day, when the report of the examiners showed that the teaching in the Home was thorough and painstaking. The income for the year had been £I9OO, and there waa a credit balance over expenditure of £46. The proprietors of the Picturesque Atlas Company have begun proceedings against three settlers of Pukekotoe to recover £lO 10h from each of them for forty.two parts of that work, A defence fund has been subscribed in the district, and the greatest interest is ehown in the case. On the further hearing of the Pukekohe Picturesque Atlas cases to-day, the plaintiffs' solicitor said that the Bench having decided to admit outside collateral evidence it was useless to go on with the case. The plaintiffs agreed that the case be strnok out. Defendants wore allowed £l2 lls costs. Auckland, April 30.

At the Police Court to day, Wm. BrowD, licensee of the Newmarket Hotel, vras fined 5s and costs for having allowed billiards to be played at tho hotel ou Good Friday. Dr Giles, R.M., said the Bench did not take a serious view of the case, for although the offence was against the Act, there was nothing in it wrong or immoral calling for a substantial penalty. The Northern Athletic Club of Professional Athletes held tlieir second meeting at tho Domiin Grounds to-day. The Cup, 100yds, was won by A. Pearson (scraton), K. Peace (6yds) being ssoond, and W. The premises of VY. Webber, tanner and leather dreossr, Onehunga, were burned down to day. The buildings were insured for £250 in the London and Liverpool, and the stock, including a considerable quantity of skins, in tho Royal for £375. The loss is estimated at £BOO. Oamaru, April 29.
