SERIOUS FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION ) Auckland, January 2. An extensive fire occurred in Grey street at 7.15 a.m. Six two-storied shops were destroyed and a seventh gutted. It commenced in the residence of Mrs Ella Hadfield, upholsterer, who had only time to escape with her three children in their nightdresses, and saved nothing. She states that she noticed smoke coming from the lower part of the house, and as the cellar was filled with flax for upholstering purposes, it is supposed it became heated aud caused the fire. The flames spread to the shops occupied by Richard Halloran, grocer ; Theresa Hand ; George Augustus Bryant, secondhand dealer ; W. H. J. Partington, photographer ; Hugh Webber, dairyman ; Davy’s boot factory ; also an empty shop, owned by Mrs Gold water, insured In the South British office for £SOO. Parlington’s stock was insured for £IOO in the Phoenix office. Mrs Hadfield was not insured. The other buildings were owned by Colonel Dawson. The insurances could not bo ascertained, in consequence of the holiday.
